I’m new to shrimping and have some questions, although the one seems to be common sense to me but I’ll ask anyway to get some feedback.
I recently took out the boat and set up on a bridge that runs east to west and has pilings running in a north to south fashion forming lanes to set up in as on typical bridges. There was a northern wind and current that night and I set up in a lane on the southern half of the bridge thinking that would be the best place to have everything funnel to us. This bridge has 6 different areas ( lanes ) that you could set up in and there were no other boats out that night, however we have someone set up about 4-5 boat lengths up current of us in the same lane. Isn’t it common sense not to do this, or am I the idiot?
My first real question is….. there’s a few low relief bridges in my area and one in particular is pretty consistent for folks dipping off of it. It’s too crowded for my taste especially with the kids, however I would like to set up the boat and shrimp it. If set up a reasonable distance away from the bridge, is this ok or bad etiquette?
Another question…. I’m located in the Cocoa area, where do I post reports at?
One last thing, after the individuals who set up in front of us left after about an hour we started to get a few shrimp. We were about in 12’ of water and we had the lights deployed about halfway down in the water column spread as far apart as we could and still see in the kill zone. We only saw about a dozen shrimp that we could dip, but we caught a good amount in the traps that we had soaking. Isn’t this the dipping season and the better trapping is in summer? I think the kids like the traps better anyways. As there being pulled to the surface it’s kind of like getting closer to seeing what’s in that present as it’s being unwrapped, they were beaming and we have now officially found our new favorite pastime.
