Capt's Pet Posts: 275 01/24/12 11:24 PM - 1 Limits 2011	Tags : None No pics today, but fished from 12:30- 3:45, caught 8 whiting, a trout, and a pomp or permit..too new to fishing to tell them apart yet. Four whiting 14-16 inches, four closer to 12. The bite was really hot the last hour, bait was wet a couple of minutes and them WHAM. Thought it was going to be a bad day when my first catch was a t-shirt and second was a beach towel. Pretty nice beach towel though, it was a keeper.

Too my knowledge, I've never caught a permit. I know there is one caught occasionally in this area. Most are further south toward the Keys. Port Orange I've been fishing most of my life - the rest I just wasted!

Sea Worthy Posts: 99 01/25/12 11:33 AM	The info Fishnfool gave is pretty solid, I will just add that this time of year it would be almost unheard of for a permit to be that far north so I would be 99.99% sure that what you caught was a pompano. They are hard to tell the difference between them, but knowing the area and time of year helps out a bit as well. Permit like water on the warmer side and Pompano on the cooler! Dan Deltona

Capt's Pet Posts: 275 01/25/12 07:35 PM - 1 Limits 2011	Thanks Dan and Fishnfool for the clarification. I have learned so much from you guys on this site. FYI, I made an incredible dip out of the whiting...it is so good I can't believe I made it. It goes as follows: I do not really care for the taste of whiting so much, so I fileted them (one thing I can do well) and soaked them in lemon juice for 24 hrs. Then, pan seared using Weber Beer Can Chicken seasoning (wal-mart) and salt both sides. Then in the food processor: prepared Whiting filets- about 4 fish 16" each 4-5 Tbsp. Lemon Juice 2 Tbsp. Worcestershire 1-2 Tbsp. black pepper Salt to taste about 2 Tbsp. Tony Chachere's Original creole seasoning 1 Tbsp. Garlic Powder 1/2 small red onion 1 pound cream cheese 1 large stalk celery 2 heaping Tbsp. Miracle Whip or Mayo (preference) 1 large jalapeno (fewer seeds in the bowl= less heat) I always do a taste test first to see how hot they are Whack it all really well in the food processor. Then you can fold in some chopped chive or green onion if you are an onion fanatic like me. You may want to adjust the seasoning to your liking at this point. Chill (overnight is best) This recipe is approximate and you may want to adjust to your liking... I will repost this in the recipe thread, as no one has a whiting dip in there yet.
