The first crab trap check of the new year, on Friday the 13th!
With two cold fronts coming through, and predicted high winds, we headed down to the coastal to check our traps. When we got there, it was 51 deg with light winds (Yea, don't like fighting the winds) and almost no boat traffic on the river.
We had dropped the traps in some new locations ( deeper water ) Had no idea what we would find. When we pulled the first trap our hopes started to rise, We had crabs, one small stone ( with a missing claw) and two small blue crabs. But we had crabs in the traps. The rest of the traps gave us mixed results.
The count for the day:
3 blue crabs ( all on the small side)
2 spider crabs
1 stone crab minus a claw
1 stone crab with keeper claw ( now minus the claw)
1 very large snail ( about 10 inches) I wonder if they are edible?
Not bad for the first trip of the year. The best part, NO SKUNKS!!
