Anchor hardware in Oak Hill has a slew of different lights. They have a gigging light on an aluminum pole with clamps and clips to battery. The end is as thick as a jar and it is a jar, it takes screw in bulbs, seals nice and no water gets in. You could chop that light up [cut pole off, ballast is in housing so your all your work is done] and make that into a submersible deployable shrimp light. I have a friend who has about 80 spiral custom made flourescent bulbs that FIT that gig light [15 watt]. He was the one that sold small green lights last year but ran out, and his eye health has not allowed him to manufacture this year. So, he is selling these propriatary bulbs for $20 each and I am gonna pick up a batch of the this weekend. I have a commercial winger that wants 6 of them...I will ask him what he is doing..and maybe I can get more ideas. To have these bulbs made he had to order 300, so these bulbs are not bulbs you can go in Home Depot and buy. You can see the gig light in the Captains equipment topic, and let your brain rattle around with this thought...the jar tip comes with a gasket and it is easy to get replaceable glass ends and gaskets. You can buy this gig light in 24 inches or 48 inch poles but you do not really need the pole. The glass is nice and thick. I replaced the incandescent bulb with Pete's custom bulb. The polarity was reversed...so I cut off the red and black clips and reversed them and put new ones on to compensate for polarity being reversed...and WOO HOO, I got a new toy! BTW, I use my gig light with my green flourescent bulb to scuot for shrimp, I attach it to my gunwhale. So, this is what I would if I have no other prospect going on, and the 24 inch gig lights are sold at Anchor hardware or at least they were a year ago...you can always turn the light back into a shrimp scouting light once you resolve your light issues and are using ones you love. Posts: 599 02/04/10 06:30 PM SPONSOR Resident Engineer LED GREENIE	I'm the person that designed and built the LilGreenie Shrimp light as part of a search for a compact. useable light. It's an outgrowth of searching for an easy to deploy light with low power drain. But making this light has proven to be difficult - lack of suitable container forced developing my own container out of acrylic pipe and end plates solvent welded into a water tight enclosure - not a trivial undertaking - lots of research in how to do it successfully. Then the problem of mounting a spiral bulb that mechanically is designed for home lighting - there are some quirks involved in the bulb design common to spiral bulbs. They are mechanically weak and require some extra steps to minimize bulb breakage. People tend to treat the lil greenie as if it's indestructible, It's not. And the LilGreenie is not repairable - a major drawback for a broken bulb - junk the light. Then, there are now technological advances in Light Emitting Diodes that will soon eclipse fluorescent bulbs for shrimp light purposes. I think it's doable now, but need to be able to prove it's doable. I've built 4 foot, 2 foot 18 inch fluorescents for about 5 years and most of the green fluorescents you see on the river are built by either myself or by leading a light building party for the past 3 years for the Internet Shrimpers and Anglers Association.- you can find the organization on the web. Approximately 300 fluorescent lights. The defacto standard light within this club is an 18 inch, 15 watt light. CaptLee's light pictures show one of these lights. Posts: 7778 02/05/10 05:11 PM Captain USCG Licensed NEW SMYRNA DELTONA	Hi My Darling, I toss my lights out as far as I can throw, let them settle, and then I release anchor line [bow and stern] and let the current push me back away from light field. These lights are durable and as long as the weight does NOT strike the housing during deployment they can take a beating. As the night goes on the water traffic and wakes blow me off my lights, and I have to keep letting out anchor line. I have 33 foot cords on some and 50 foot cords on other lights. When I tie off my orange cord on a cleat and some inconsiderate &^%&%$ comes blowing by, the tight orange cord on a rock and roll moves my lights. Those stainless rings are on my line are so I can shorten the depth cord and control how close to the top of the water I want my light. If the current is weak, the light pops out of the water like a buoy vertical. If the current is strong, it goes almost 90 degrees half way in water column. No way can I drop my lights straight down, the current will get a hold of them and they will be under the boat. I have 17 foot of depth line on lights, I do not want that 17 foot depth line pointing to the inlet under my boat :-) Very rarely do I deploy the lights with out being clamped on a ring, but I did last night tho" but I was in 11 foot of water. The current was ripping with 10-15 mph South wind. Recap: After I place my boat horizontal, and work both anchors to get horizontal I toss the lights. If the lights scooted to close towards boat I let more anchor line out so my boat drifts back away from lights. I like my lights about 5 feet in front of me. I try to dip in the darkest light field I can handle so I have a shot at more of the jumbo's. The lights are for us to see, shrimp do not like light. If light field is to dim or to hard to separate debris from shrimp, I pull in the light lengthen my depth line by clipping a different "ring" making the depth line longer, and then I re-deploy. I fuss with my lights until I am happy, and then I give the signal to start chasing! Most of the components are not cheep, there is a lot that goes into this, and in the end, it worth the exrta funds to buy it pre-made. For the average person that wants to build, a couple problems that you will in-counter. if the PVC joints arent sealed properly or wire going into it. bam there goes your LED array to take it apart is easy with a hack saw but depending how you put it together will you be able to reuse most of the pieces. The plan was to build seven to ten. I have built 6 and 4 are working, 2 dead ( water issues) 1= 5 leds are not working, the 3 that are working will not be used like the pro built one. bottom line i could have bought 4 and half for this learning experience. but i leared alot "Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, Vodka and tonic in one hand and Bud lite in the other, loudly proclaiming... "Wow! What a ride!"

Posts: 2656 01/28/12 08:40 AM S.E. Fla. Regional Coordinator - 1 Limits 2011	Before I met Niteowl - and before I joined this forum - a friend and I tried building LED lights. Not having a working model to copy, we had a LOT of trial and error. Mostly error! We finally made 2 that worked longer than an hour and stopped while we were ahead - err - behind! Total cost of the 2 - about $350 - if you count the failures - maybe $500. I have a background in electronics and my friend is an electrical contractor. That didn't help much. This was 5 or 6 years ago and I wish I'd known Niteowl then. It would have saved money and frustration. The LEDGreenie is tops!! Boca Raton FL

I found a web site that has water proof led light strips so you don,t have to worry about water leaking in. The strips have 30 green leds and run about six bucks each. Me and a buddy made eight two foot lights for under $150. After the build we threw them into my pool for two days on one battery and they all lasted. There was a post on here with a step by step process with parts list, but I think it was deleted.

I found the led strips for cheap, and did not buy clear pvc pipe at $7 - $9 foot. Thats the good thing about buying water proof leds. And we did not buy the $10 a foot wire, we used some thing else.
