Do you think Snook season should open as usual? Or should it stay closed thru 2010?

I have only caught 1 legal snook in my 30+ years of fishing, so I make no impact either way with my rate of catch

"we are at a red drum population now where keeping 1 trophy fish per day should be allowed and will help balance the population, and prevent over-sized reds from dying during revival periods after a long hard fight"
I can't for the life of me wonder why you would want to kill big breeder fish that restock our Lagoons. The have no eating quality being that big. Just like the big drum that are killed at the bridges, most of that meat is thrown away and full of worms, and has to taste like a truck tire. And no they are not flourishing inside of the Lagoons. This is why we have a new stocking program for redfish in the state of florida. Keep in mind that one of the big schools can be wiped out in under a week if they allowed everyone to take big redfish. As far as the snook, keep it closed! The slot limit is a joke now so who really cares. We can't be greedy about these things, there are so many new anglers to our waters it's not even funny. You don't have to kill everything that cacth, one slot redfish will feed four people. Every trip I book I am sending www.projectsnook.com $20.00 to help learn how to breed and relase snook back into the wild. |

Capt. Shawn thanks for sharing your opinion. And as usual this is your opinion as you are not a scientist. I can assume you are not a chef either. I personally do not eat over slot redfish, but I have heard they taste the same. I can't help but think how many 'human beings' could have eaten snook fresh before last winters freeze had the slot limit not gotten so out of control already. What it is on snook like a 6" window? Please! This is not a personal matter for me. I dont fish for snook, I dont target snook, I dont eat snook. I actually elected to not buy a snook stamp this season. I do not have 'personal' feelings about this fishery, and am able to look at the big picture without emotions. Closing the species, opening the species, will not affect my fishing. But its another way the government is creaping into OUR FISHERY rights. We must be mindful. If these people have their way, they will close bottom fishing offshore for 20 years....
The website you provided is interesting and has been doing THIS SNOOK RESEARCH SINCE 1980. The snook kill last winter was a convenient marketing timing for them to push for more $$$$ funding for the (14) Fourteen snook they are studying. On a contrary note, Anglers are reporting they have never seen so much snook activity as they have this season. Snook are in abundance. We have to be careful folks. This type of viewpoint and bad science is what will eventually will shut down our fisheries forever!!!! We give them an inch (literally) and they take a mile. |

Your right I am not a chef ( or a scientist hence the name "Captain" Shawn ) ... but I have had a ton a clients fish with me who live in states where they can take a big bull redfish, and all of them say they taste like crap at that size. To think they will shut down fishing is a joke! "by way the government is creaping into OUR FISHERY rights" Who do you think manages our fishery's, peta? It's not YOUR fishery, you do not own stock in our fishery's do you? |

Is this Snook Foundation the same researchers that got into so much hotwater for using illegal gill nets when they were doing research at Caya Costa, getting the scientific numbers, and killed thousands of small snook in the process? I am not gov't, scientist, Capt. or any other important thing, certainly no chef although I cook and eat what I catch, including the big black drum, and waste none as the ribs are quite good battered and fried. I have eaten tons of snook and do like it, although in this area I've never caught a slot snook. I think the red snapper closure sucks as there are limits in place to protect the species, and it is going to affect the livelihood of hard-working decent folks who have a big investment in eqpt, right on down to those they employ. I think the small limit on the snook will prevent the breeders being fished out. I'd vote no don't close the season, but I don't plan on fishing it at any rate.
If life is measured by family and friends, I am the wealthiest woman in the world!

""by way the government is creaping into OUR FISHERY rights"
Who do you think manages our fishery's, peta? It's not YOUR fishery, you do not own stock in our fishery's do you? " On the contrary. I believe it IS OUR fishery. I believe that government should only get involved where individuals can't. If we left these decisions up to people that really understand what is going on in the Lagoon, like yourself, we would have a much more prosperous and profitable fishery. The problem is that some beaurocrat in Talahassee, or worse yet, Wahsington are the one making these decisions for us. We the people, should be involved in these decisions. We should be the responsible ones, and when we notice an issue, we should react. I have watched the flounder fishery get worse and worse every year due to commercial gigging, and because WE do nothing about it, eventually, the state will have to intervene, and make drastic limits to ensure the survival of the species. I personally don't have any issue with them extending the closure, if it will help the population of such an amazing fish. I just wish they would utilize real world info to make the decisions that affect commercial fisherman, guides, and amatures like myself. Shawn, who knows the state of the fishery that you guide on EVERY day, better than you? Answer? Not the government. |

Although its been a while, I do fish for snook and I harvest legal slot sized fish in our area with decent sucess. I've only targeted snook a couple of times since the freeze with nothing to show for it. From what I've seen (or havn't seen depending on how you look at it) and from talking to others I feel the NSB area was hit hard by the freeze. I reluctantly support a regional extension of the snook closure because I believe it would benifit the area population. Keep in mind we are at the northern most territory for snook, our area is not as prolific a snook fishery as Sebastian and further south.

Fishinbro... you have a very valid point if you give them and inch they will take a mile, but I think in this case a closure extension may be for the best. We are not talking about a fish that is harvested commercially, I feel like the snook is too valuable as a catch and release fishery to risk further stock depletion so everyone can eat one every once in a while, although they are very tasty.

The Snook Foundation and Project Snook are not the same thing! And no pissing match here I am just stating my personal opinions on the subject. As a fishing Guide and not a freezer filler what do you think betters me in the long run? What is going to happin if we get a hard freeze again this year?
"God tells me it is OUR FISHERY 26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, like us: and let him have rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over the cattle and over all the earth and over every living thing which goes flat on the earth. -Holy Bible: Genesis 1:26" LOL are you going to quote Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy as well........
