

In 1860 the blue crab was named, "Callinectes", meaning “beautiful swimmer.” They are compromised of 10 jointed legs and a shell [carapace]
The upper surface of the crab shell is bluish to dark green to brownish-green. The fingers of the males’ claws are blue, tipped with red; the females’ claws are red with darker red tips. The lower body is creamy white or white.
- Live in bays and around river mouths, like soft bottoms to bury up [eyes and antennae exposed]
- Shallow water creatures prefer less than 100 ft.
- Females go offshore to spawn, they spawn all year [except Dec-Feb in Fla]
- Require specfic salinity, temps, food sources, water quality and habitat.
- Can swim 500 miles in 100 days
- Only females migrate [offshore/inshore] & males stay in estuaries
- Live for 4 years, science is not sure
- Females mate ONCE, males mate ALL THE TIME
- 2 million eggs depend on salinity to survive, 1 egg will make it to mature crab
- Can regenerate lost appendages [legs & claws]
