I was hoping to get some information on the USCG Captains Licensing Programs. I know Capt Lee you have a good referral for this. I hear there is an online program for this as well and then you take your final test at a location somewhere. I hear there are 2 different levels of this license too. Master and regular? Not sure the wording. Any information would be helpful on this? Time, money, how much time as far as driving back and forth (class room time if there is any), etc.? Posts: 7778 06/21/10 08:21 PM Captain USCG Licensed NEW SMYRNA DELTONA	Boatwrench and Boatman both did Master's level [2nd class is a short class]. You can PM them. I went 3 years ago, and the costs have gone up. The course runs about $500, then there is books, the first aid class, the CPR class, the drug screening, the USCG exam cost, the TWIC security card....figure $1000 to start. The 6/pack license requires charting, not sure how on-line does that. If your gonna be near the ICW you need 6/pack OUPV license, then once you get that you can go on to take like a 4 day course for Masters or something like that. I think if you take package deal it is cheaper. I went to Adam's Marine and so did Boatwrench Click here Adams Marine Test is open book except for the rules of navigation and charting. You have 8 hours to exam. Course is intense, and even the most experienced feel a little overwhelmed...I did the course in 10 days, and they held it at a hotel in Sanford. Adam's travel the entire state and hold them all over, you can see on their website their schedule. They just did T-ville June 1st, nothing else for rest of year near you. Sea School coming to Melbourne Dec... Click Here - Sea School I cannot help you with the on-line class, you can google that info. All you do is go to one of their testing centers to take final exam. Posts: 95 07/02/10 09:46 PM Captain USCG Licensed	If your check clears you pass, it's that simple........ The test as well as the school is a joke! You have one year from the time of your six pack to get get your masters. They will teach you how to pass the ( open book ) test. I went for my six pack and on the last day of testing it took all of 20 minutes to pass. Your looking at 4-5 months from start to finish to be legal due to back ground checks and permits about $2000 depending on what your doing. They passed a lady with flying colors who had never been behind the wheel of a boat, and even showed her how to cheat on the U.S.C.G application for logged hours at sea. They gave the answers to the test to a few the first day of class and told them to take it home and study that. One guy was a drug runner that was busted with a ton of coke just offshore of Miami, and they passed him as well and the U.S.C.G approved. And to be correct, you can run any body of water near the ICW as long as you stay 300 feet away with a two county guide permit.

There is no such thing as a "part time Captain". And if you can't produce day after day with good results, you pretty much loss everything. That's why you see most of these part time Guides drop off the map in less than two years.... If you want to fish for a living understand that it's a HARD living and you better love what your doing. Your on your own for health insurance also.

It for sure would give some food for thought to anyone thinking of accomplishing this achievement. Almost sounds like a night job could be required to carry the financial burden if your not fluid and crafty enough to get on plane to start with. Sure gives a sobering view to the accomplishment, sacrifice, and responsibility of becoming a "Captain!" Kudos to all you Captains! If life is measured by family and friends, I am the wealthiest woman in the world!
