Great first post saltydog25 and welcome to the forum. I was on Sunglow today and was thinking about going back on Monday, it's my home away from home around here. I usually wear a yellowfin tuna visor on my head. Say hello if you're up there.

Welcome SaltyDog, Marg & stikbldr!
I was off yesterday fussing with my boat, still can't decide if my problem is the battery or the charger LOL. So, took it into a auto place and they also produced weird data from my battery. So today gonna trickle charge it for 3 days and see if it fully loads... Anyhoo, we love new brothers and sisters here. We love to talk local angling from shrimp to fishing, crabs or scallops. We are all extreme lovers of winter shrimping in Oak Hill and Edgewater from both boat and pier. Nothing to fear here, we are all just laid back loving folks who love to help others reach their goals. If you need anything just holler! |

CaptLeeNoga wrote:Thanks! Well, my husband and I were visiting friends in Alabama a few months ago and they took us crabbing off a pier near Mobile. Who knew? (we're from northern MN, near Lake Superior, lots of water/no sea life. been living in central FL for about 5 yrs) We were thrilled to see the Titusville pier open and went over there Saturday night, just to spectate. There were only a few people shrimping/crabbing and they really didn't look like they knew what they were doing lol. It started to pour so we left, but we did manage to get a couple hours in I guess. I found this website and have been reading through all the posts gathering info. We're completely new to all of this. We were mainly interested in crabbing but we didn't know at the time that you could actually shrimp from the pier. Now I came across a few boats for sale and my mind is changing (I won't be really popular with the hubs when I tell him another boat is prob in the near future, oops, haha) We have a heavy 28 ft pontoon w/ a 140 inboard, to big to be hauling around. I guess our next step is going to be going out and finding some equipment, we've just been to busy so far this week. We'll just start with dip nets for the pier. are lights recommended, if so what can we find that are inexpensive for now? There's our story in a nut shell :-)

Hi marg and welcome to the community! | #98 | ||

Dipping with nets is pretty much a winter activity down in these parts, but crabbing is optimal right now. It seems we have a bonus crop this year. For shrimping and crabbing your pontoon is great if you are comfortable towing it to the coast. Many folks use them as they will accomodate friends and are roomy enough to accomodate plenty of gear. Perhaps you'd like to try a real hands on adventure: SCALLOPING! There is another road trip sometime in the near future. The captain will give you invaluable intel in many areas. Just wanted to say WELCOME Glad you are here!

A boat! Lee's
pumps pure passion when that word is spoken...Ok. When getting a boat folks make big boo-boo's. I am NOT telling you want to do, I am suggesting things to considere. The #1 mistake I see people make is they DO NOT buy the right boat for what they want to do, and where they want to do it and therefore limit themselves and opportunities. If you plan on setting traps and want to fish the lagoon flats, DO NOT buy a bay boat or a V-hull [get flat bottom or skiff], with a v-hull you will draft to deep and will not be able to navigate the skinny water. If you want to shrimp, do not buy a craft where you cannot stand safely on the bow. But, do not limit yourself because when you settle in here we tempt our other members with road trips and you will want to eventually pull the trigger and try new things! If your mainly gonna fish in tidal waters [4 ft and up], a bay boat is fine as long as you get a center console fishing version. Many boats will be "fire sale" as we approach the end of summer. Folks litter the highways in September looking to sell off their boats. I know we can get you into shrimping in the winter! As for lights for now...I am not sure what you consider inexpensive. The cheapest lights are StarFires @ Walmart, they run $14 each and they have to be submerged before you hook them to battery. The wire is not long, so you need to splice 15 -25 feet feet of wire on to them [depending on pier vs boat]. They kill batteries fast, so bring a battery dedicated to shrimping. YOU NEVER use your boat crank battery to run your lights. The dip nets can be bought anywhere....but not all nets are created equal. We are off season and some bait stores are lean on nets etc. When you buy a net, if your gonna dip the pier you will need 18 foot which has to come in a few pieces of pole [so in your search, buy a net with a pole you can join pieces]. We have other experts who pier dip. If your boat dipping from Dec to April, you can buy a net and it immediately. We will help you every step of the way from buying a boat to buying equipment. We have opinions |
